The Cunha Cocktail

For those who crave an easy, fun, and exotic cocktail, look no further than my own creation dubbed the Cunha (Named by an enthusiastically supportive friend). The Cunha is a cocktail that is the love child of the caipirinha, the national drink of Brazil, and the classic gin & tonic.

Caipirinhas somewhat echo the essence of an Old Fashioned, substituting orange bitters for lime and whiskey for cachaça, a spirit produced only in Brazil. Distilled from sugarcane juice, cachaça adds a saccharine profile, yet surprises the pallet with a funkiness not unlike that of a good rum. In fact, cachaça falls nicely between the funky depths of rums and the brash rawness of rhum agricole, pairing with the sweet and sour flavor of lime. 

The Cunha keeps the intensity of the cachaça at the forefront of your taste buds while creating dimensionality thanks to the bubbly, softer profile of gin and tonic water. In the case of a Cunha, the tonic acts as the bassline of this certified platinum song, harmonizing with the lead singer, cachaça and giving the overall sound its oumf!

Give the Cunha a shot! While you could substitute white rum, a bottle of cachaça will last you a long time, and this cocktail pairs well with virtually any gin from our multitude of Quebec distilleries.

Add as much, or as little, tonic as you fancy.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz. gin
  • just under 0.5 oz. cachaça (or white rum)
  • 0.5 oz. lime juice
  • 0.25 oz. Simple syrup
  • tonic water

Steps:

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Pour in the cachaça, gin, lime, and simple syrup.
  3. Stir for 20 seconds.
  4. Strain into a Collins glass.
  5. Add tonic water to taste.
  6. Express the lime by twisting its peel for aroma.
  7. Garnish with a lime wheel.
